This blended learning program requires eight weeks of skill practice with a direct report or colleague and completion of a post-course skills assessment. All components of the course must be completed in order to successfully complete the course.
In this instructor-led training, frontline staff supervisors discuss strategies for introducing and managing the various types of change in the Y that can affect staff performance. Participants explore what staff may experience during a change, what supervisors can do to ensure successful change, and how a supervisor can support staff who may be resistant to change. With guidance from the course instructor and assistance of coaching and planning tools, participants conclude the course better prepared to manage different types of change for their staff.
The Y is a powerful place for all people to find the support needed to make and sustain healthy behavior changes. Y staff have a unique and special opportunity to guide people in supportive groups on their journey. To do this effectively, staff must be willing, courageous, and skilled enough to resist the urge to prescribe solutions, and instead harness the power of a supportive group helping each other make sustainable changes in lifestyle choices.
This course prepares Y staff to facilitate small group discussions that engage and encourage participants to formulate and share ideas to support others in problem solving and goal attainment. This course also helps staff manage group dynamics using techniques that help the group focus on the topic at hand and function positively and collaboratively.
This course is for Y staff who serve as a small group facilitator or leader of a small group. These small groups could be connected to specific programs related to chronic conditions, or other small groups in the Y, e.g. youth and teen programs, parent programs, older adults programs, volunteer groups, home interviews, camp, etc.
Experience with using Listen First and/or motivational interviewing is recommended, but not required. Prior to attending the Facilitating Change in Small Groups class, participants will need to complete the attached pre-course reading.
Leading People is a one-day course that develops and supports Y leaders to be successful at inspiring, motivating, compelling, supporting, and sustaining effective people. Whether it is a team you are assigned, create, or serve in the Y or in your community, this course will help you build the competencies to lead others in a supportive, inspiring, and non-authoritative or managerial way.
Be prepared to learn and develop competencies on topics such as:
* understanding yourself as a leader
* building a collaborative community of people committed to achieving collective goals
* creating a positive environment where all can thrive
* establishing a trusting communication style that supports others to develop into stronger leaders
You will be asked to use your own experience as a personal case study. You will "think and ink" personal reflections on your own leadership hopes.
This course is required for Team Leader Certification.
